How do you help your dog survive the heat?

We are all aware of how to cope and endure the heat. However, we must not forget about our pets, who also suffer during high temperatures. Dogs are particularly bad at withstanding the heat, so on hot days we need to ensure that our pet has constant access to water and the right conditions.

Bigger dog – more water
Dogs, especially larger ones, need plenty of water to stay hydrated. Mineral deficiencies can be supplemented by giving your dog mineral water, preferably still water. It is advisable to use a metal water bowl as it keeps cooler for longer. The water in the bowl should be changed several times a day so that it is always fresh and cool.

Although we associate cool water with ice cubes, we should not add them to your dog’s water. This can lead to our pet catching a cold, which is particularly dangerous during hot weather.

Frozen treats
Instead of ice cubes, you can freeze pieces of food, such as pate, and give them to your dog as a treat. This is a great way to cool your pet down and give them a treat. Frozen treats will provide relief on hot days and give your dog a moment of joy.

Additional tips for hot days
To make your dog even more comfortable in hot weather, there are a few additional aspects you should take care of:

Shade and ventilation: Provide your dog with a place in the shade where he can hide from the sun. You can also use fans or air conditioners to keep the air in the room cool.
Avoid walks during the hottest hours: Plan walks in the morning or evening when temperatures are cooler. Avoid walking on heated asphalt, which can burn your dog’s paws.
Cooling mats and waistcoats: Invest in cooling mats or waistcoats to help maintain your dog’s body temperature. These are particularly useful during very hot days.
Additional water sources: Set up several water bowls in different areas of the house and garden so that your dog has easy access to water no matter where he is.
Regular health checks: Be alert to any signs of overheating, such as excessive panting, lethargy, or vomiting. Consult your vet if necessary.
With these simple measures, we can greatly improve the comfort of our dogs in hot weather, while ensuring their health and well-being.
